Making the most of the energy you generate
Solar PV panels generate electricity during daylight hours. A battery stores surplus energy so you can use more of it in the evening, rather than exporting it to the grid.
Each installation is planned around the property: roof orientation and shading, where the inverter and battery will go, cable routes, and the condition and capacity of the existing installation.
Solar PV and battery systems must be notified to the local distribution network operator, and larger systems need approval before they are connected. Your electrician will explain what applies to your project.
If you plan to apply for export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee, energy suppliers usually require the installation to be MCS certified. Raise this with your electrician at the start so certification requirements are clear before you commit.

Questions
Solar PV & batteries FAQs
Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?
Often, yes. It depends on your existing inverter, available space and network operator requirements. Your electrician will look at the current system and explain the options.
Will I be paid for the electricity I export?
Under the Smart Export Guarantee, some energy suppliers pay for exported electricity. Suppliers usually require MCS certification, so discuss this with your electrician before you go ahead.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels?
Many domestic installations fall under permitted development, but there are exceptions, for example listed buildings and some conservation areas. Check with your local planning authority if you are unsure.
What size system do I need?
It depends on your electricity use, roof space and budget. Your electrician will discuss your usage and the property before quoting.
