Planning a safe charger installation
Every EV charger installation starts with checking the property: the incoming supply and main fuse, the earthing arrangement, the condition of the consumer unit and the cable route to the parking space. These checks determine what is needed and whether anything must be upgraded first.
Chargepoints sold for home and workplace use in Great Britain must have smart functionality. You can choose your own charger or ask your electrician to suggest a suitable model for your vehicle and supply.
Some installations need to be notified to, or approved by, the local electricity network operator. Your electrician will explain whether this applies to your property.

Questions
EV chargers FAQs
Can I have a home charger without off-street parking?
A home charger needs a suitable parking space and a safe cable route. Trailing cables across public pavements can create hazards, so your electrician will discuss what is practical for your property.
Will I need a consumer unit upgrade?
Not always. It depends on the condition and capacity of your existing board. Your electrician will check this before quoting.
How long does installation take?
Many straightforward home installations take around half a day to a day once the checks are complete. Longer cable runs or supply upgrades add time.
Can you install a charger I've already bought?
Often, yes, provided it suits your property and supply. Let your electrician know the make and model when you get in touch.

Send photos for a quote
Photos help your electrician understand the job. Take them from a safe position and don't remove covers from the consumer unit, sockets, switches or fittings. If anything is hot, sparking or smells of burning, keep clear and call instead.
