Fire detection
Smoke, heat and fire alarms
Mains-powered, interlinked smoke and heat alarms for homes and rental properties, and fire alarm system installation and servicing for HMOs, communal areas and commercial premises.
- Interlinked smoke & heat alarms
- Rental & HMO properties
- Fire alarm installation
- Fire alarm servicing
Choosing the right level of protection
The right fire detection depends on the property, how it is used and who lives or works there. British Standard BS 5839-6 covers fire detection in homes, including HMOs, and BS 5839-1 covers systems in non-domestic premises. Where a fire risk assessment is required, it should inform the type of system needed.
Your electrician can install and replace alarms, extend existing systems and carry out routine servicing, explaining what each option involves before you commit.

The details
What to expect
Smoke and heat alarms
Mains-powered alarms with battery backup, interlinked so that when one sounds they all sound, give earlier warning throughout the home. Heat alarms are used in kitchens, where smoke alarms would cause false alarms.
In England, landlords must make sure there is at least one smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation, and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room used as living accommodation that has a fixed combustion appliance (excluding gas cookers).

- Alarms for rental properties and new tenancies
- Adding alarms during a rewire or renovation
Fire alarm installation and servicing
HMOs, communal areas and commercial premises may need a fire alarm system with a control panel, detectors, manual call points and sounders.
BS 5839-1 recommends that fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises are inspected and serviced at intervals of no more than six months, alongside regular user testing.
- New fire alarm installations
- Extending or upgrading existing systems
- Periodic inspection and servicing
- Fault investigation and repair

Questions
Fire & smoke alarms FAQs
Do I need interlinked alarms?
Interlinked alarms are widely recommended because everyone hears the warning wherever a fire starts. The type of system that is suitable depends on the property, and your electrician can explain the options.
What alarms do landlords need?
In England, landlords must provide at least one smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance, excluding gas cookers. HMOs and licensed properties may need more, depending on the fire risk assessment and local authority licensing conditions.
How often should a fire alarm system be serviced?
For non-domestic premises, BS 5839-1 recommends inspection and servicing at intervals of no more than six months. Home smoke and heat alarms should be tested regularly by the occupier, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Can you fit carbon monoxide alarms as well?
Yes. Carbon monoxide alarms can be fitted alongside smoke and heat alarms and positioned according to the manufacturer's instructions.
