Fault finding

Fault finding and electrical repairs

Methodical fault finding for tripping circuits, partial power loss, faulty sockets, lighting problems and damaged accessories, with a clear explanation of the cause and the repair.

  • Tripping RCDs & breakers
  • Loss of power
  • Sockets, switches & lights
  • Urgent faults 24/7

Finding the cause, not just the symptom

Electrical faults can be intermittent and hard to pin down. Your electrician uses a methodical approach of isolating circuits, testing and inspecting to trace the cause, whether it is a failed appliance, a damaged cable, water getting in or a loose connection.

Once the fault is found, your electrician will explain what is wrong and what the repair involves. A straightforward repair may be possible on the same visit if you agree to it; larger work is quoted separately.

If a fault looks dangerous, such as burning smells, scorching, sparking or exposed live parts, switch off at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so, keep clear and call 07908 484001.

The details

What to expect

Before you call

If a circuit trips, try unplugging the appliances on that circuit and resetting it. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, or you are unsure, leave it switched off and get in touch.

Never remove covers from the consumer unit, sockets or switches.

How it works

A simple process

No online booking or payment is needed. Scope, availability and payment arrangements are agreed before anything is booked.

  1. Step 1: Describe the fault

Call or WhatsApp with what is happening and when it started.

  2. Step 2: Agree the visit

Your electrician discusses the problem, how the visit is charged and when an electrician can attend.

  3. Step 3: Fault finding

Circuits are isolated, inspected and tested to trace the cause.

  4. Step 4: Repair or quotation

Agreed repairs are carried out, or a quotation is provided for larger work.

Questions

Fault finding FAQs

Is fault finding chargeable?

Yes. Fault finding takes time and testing, so it is chargeable. Your electrician will explain how the visit is charged when you discuss the job, before attendance.

My RCD keeps tripping. What should I do?

Switch off or unplug appliances on the affected circuits and try resetting the RCD. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it trips with everything unplugged, leave it off and get in touch.

Can you repair the fault on the same visit?

If the repair is straightforward and you agree to it, it may be possible. If parts are needed or the work is more extensive, your electrician will quote for it separately.

Is a burning smell from a socket an emergency?

Yes. Stop using it, switch off the circuit at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so, and call. If there is smoke or fire, leave the property and call 999.

Send photos for a quote

Photos help your electrician understand the job. Take them from a safe position and don't remove covers from the consumer unit, sockets, switches or fittings. If anything is hot, sparking or smells of burning, keep clear and call instead.
