Lighting that works when the power doesn't
Emergency lighting switches on automatically when the normal lighting fails, helping people find their way out safely. It is typically needed in commercial premises, HMOs and the communal areas of flats, as identified by the fire risk assessment.
BS 5266-1 sets out recommendations for emergency lighting, including a short functional test each month and a full rated-duration test once a year. Keeping a log of tests helps the responsible person show the system is being looked after.
Your electrician can install new emergency lighting, replace failed fittings and batteries, and carry out periodic testing with written records.

Testing and records
Monthly function tests are short tests that check each fitting switches to battery. The annual test runs fittings for their full rated duration, commonly three hours, to confirm the batteries still hold their charge.
Fittings need time to recharge after a full-duration test, so it is usually planned for when the building is lightly occupied. Your electrician can carry out testing to a schedule and provide written records.
